The colonists were mainly self controlled until George III became king. When he did, he became more strict with the colonies; new taxes and restrictive trading acts caused for many to object.

They were used to a self government, and taxes were imposed. Trading acts were also imposed. They did get to vote.

Taxation without representation, strict trade policies, and they were punished for revolting against the kings unfair policies. The colonists had little freedom and were under the strict rule of king George III.

When George loll came into throne in 1760 and made the colonist pay more taxes and not have many rights.
