Karen was beaten and abused as a child, so she created multiple personalities to help her cope with the pain. She had a boy alter ego that couldn't be abused the way she had been abused so it helped he deal with the pain. Karen had 17 different personalities she had 1 for about everything, she had "Katherine and Holden" who were here responsible adults that acted like she thought adults could act.

While reading about Karen the most interesting part to me was how her therapist had to essentially combine her personalities until all she had was one personality with all the traits and memories of the altars. I think it would be interesting to read more about how this was done because it doesn't go into much detail in the article. I also thought it was interesting how there was a personality for each part of her life such as at school, during the abuse, and when she would be at home not being abused.

I agree that it didn't really go into much detail in the article and I think that his book would be something that I would be interested in reading to learn more about her.

I agree that it would be interesting to see how the therapist worked with Karen to combine her personalities. This is something that I almost forgotten about that is an intriguing and important part of Karen's story.

I would also like to read more about Karen and her 17 different personalities and would like to learn how Dr. Baer was able to treat her.

The article about Karen's Crowded Mind was very interesting to me. The way that Karen handled the abuse she went through was very fascinating to read about and then Dr. Baer being able to get her past that and get all 17 of her personalities to merge back into one is incredible. I think that it would be amazing to be able to work with someone who has been able to treat someone with a multiple personality disorder or to even treat one. Multiple personality disorders have always been intriguing to me because you can see how someone deals with a situation with different personalities as a coping mechanism.

It's astounding to me that someone like Karen was able to eventually have a normal life after all the traumatic events that went on in her past. The two personalities that had the biggest effect on me were Miles, the boy who took her spot when her dad abused her, and Sidney, the girl who acted like nothing was wrong with her father. It's hard for me to understand how a person can block out something so violent as well as being able to ignore the fact that their abuser is their father. Her way of coping was what allowed her to live a semi-normal life until she got help. The fact that Karen was able to eventually live a normal life tells a person how strong some people really are.

I also found it amazing how well her multiple personalities allowed her to cope with her situation and it amazes me that the human mind is capable of such things.

Karen's Crowded Mind is about a woman who has created 17 different personalities after she was physically, sexually, and mentally abused. Having a multiple personality itself is rare let alone having 17 alters. In this article it discusses about after years of therapy Karen's alters start to open up to the psychiatrist who is working her case. At the end of the article it states that Karen's alters would need to be combined into one personality so that her treatment could be completed. This was a success, she had acquired all of the memories and traits of the different alters and they were now accessible to her.

Karen Overhill as a child was put through traumatic events (worse than you would usually think of as traumatic) and to cope with hese events, she became more than just herself... let me elaborate. Karen had seventeen separate personalities, all for a different situation. For example, she had Karl, a little boy who absorbed the pain so she wouldn't have to endure it, she had Elise that went to school and wore clothing that covered the bruises. Many more were formed such as a mother and father figure, as well as personalities that were depressive, suicidal, and artistic. She went through seventeen years of therapy to merge these personalities but at that point she wasn't completely to a 'normal' state.
